A Family Haulage Business Built on Generations of Experience

Stevenson Bros is a family transport business with deep roots in central Scotland, built from the hard work and practical engineering skills of generations of the Stevenson family. Based in Avonbridge, the company has grown from a small local operation into one of Scotland’s best-known haulage businesses, while still remaining firmly family-run at heart.

The story began in 1946 when John Alexander Stevenson — known to the family as JA — started repairing machinery for local farmers in Avonbridge. Originally from Shettleston in Glasgow, JA had moved to the village where he met his wife Kate and began building what would become the family business. A skilled mechanic and fabricator, he gradually expanded from farm repairs into transporting sawdust and timber products across Scotland, supplying farmers, sawmills and later major industrial customers.

The original yard JA bought in Avonbridge remains the headquarters of the business today although the fleet has expanded. What started as a sole trader operation evolved into Stevenson Brothers in 1976, established by JA and his five sons. Over the decades, the company has continued to grow through hard work, long-standing customer relationships and a willingness to adapt with the industry.

Today, Jim Stevenson and Billy Stevenson support the next generation of the family Jennifer Hunter and Willie Stevenson. Family has always been central to the company, with many family members spanning four generations working in the business over the last five decades.

Stevenson Bros operates a modern fleet working across Scotland and throughout the UK, supported by depots in locations including Elgin, Errol, Grangemouth and Irvine. The company currently employs around 100 team members; drivers, experienced workshop mechanics/ fitters, fabricators, plant operators, and office staff, many of whom have spent decades with the business.

The fleet itself reflects the company’s long history within the transport industry. From the early Morris Commercials, Leylands and Bedfords through to today’s predominantly Scania fleet, Stevenson Bros has continually invested in equipment and innovation. The business was one of the early adopters of walking floor trailers in Scotland and developed specialist equipment in-house long before it became common within the industry.

In recent years, Stevenson Bros has become part of the wider A.W. Jenkinson Group, securing the long-term future of the business while allowing it to retain the identity, people and values that have defined it for generations. As Jim Stevenson says, the business has always been built around hard work, practical people and simply “getting on with the job properly.”
